Once again this summer, the sun is burning down from the sky and temperatures are reaching new record heights. This is when sun shading really comes into its own. In order to enjoy the valuable services provided by awning, external venetian blinds and so on for as long as possible, everyone should give their sun shading system the occasional treat, clean it and give it some care. Warema, the sun shading expert, has a number of tips regarding the best things to do for the various fabrics and materials.

External venetian blinds
First use a hand-held vacuum cleaner or hand brush to remove any dust, pollen or leaves on the slats. Special products such as slat cleaning tongs or brush are ideal for this task. Then wipe the fixed components with a damp cloth or sponge. Make sure none of the electrical components come into contact with water, as this would be a risk of short circuiting.

Awnings
Even though the idea is not without its temptations, awning fabrics must not be put in the washing machine. Small stains or streaks of dirt can be removed when dry using a non-colouring rubber eraser. Heavier stains should be softened in a lather of warm water and a mild detergent, and left for 15 minutes. Then rinse with clear water and leave until completely dry to prevent mould or mildew from developing. Refresh the impregnation if necessary. A dirt film can often develop on the surfaces of the fixed components, the articulated arms or the front rail that could be permanently burnt into the coating by the sun. Regular care treatment with thorough cleaning will protect the materials.

Roller shutters
These are best cleaned from top to bottom. First clean the box, then the guide rails and the shutter curtains, and finally the end rail. Brush off any loose dirt first with a hand brush or vacuum cleaner. Then wipe the roller shutters clean with a microfibre cloth and a mixture of water and a mild detergent. Wipe the surface dry to avoid watermarks.
Insect screen Insect screens at windows and doors should also be wiped clean of dust and pollen at the end of the summer. Carefully clean the fabric with a soft brush and, if necessary, wipe with a damp cloth or cleaning glove.

Internal sun shading systems
With regard to roller blind, curtain panels, vertical louvre blinds, pleated blinds and black-out blinds, the type of cleaning depends on the material. There are basically the options of brushing or vacuuming the textiles, wiping them with a damp cloth or similar item, or soaking them in a mild detergent solution. Putting them in the washing machine is a big NO. In the event of doubt, consult a specialised retailer.
Please noteHigh-pressure cleaners, abrasive sponges, aggressive cleaning agents and solvents such as alcohol, dry-cleaning liquid must never be used. Any maintenance work should only be carried out by an expert.
