In light of the ongoing economic crisis, especially in the construction industry, the WAREMA Group had to record a decline in sales and earnings in the fiscal year 2024, but was still able to successfully hold its ground in a difficult environment. Worldwide, the company achieved a total revenue of around 687 million euros (2023: 753 million euros) with its two divisions Sun & Living Spaces and Plastics & Engineering.

"We expected 2024 to be a challenging year that would accordingly impact our business success. Nevertheless, we were able to effectively mitigate the negative developments in the face of the strained market situation and economic uncertainties," analyzes Angelique Renkhoff-Mücke, CEO of WAREMA Renkhoff SE, the current situation. She does not expect a quick improvement. "We are still experiencing extremely low levels of residential construction and a decline in commercial construction in the industry. This is likely to continue in 2025," Renkhoff-Mücke outlines the economic development.

Focus on sustainability in a dual sense

Therefore, stability and sustainability through targeted implementation of efficiency measures are all the more important. "For us, the focus was and remains on securing jobs alongside the future orientation of the company. That's why we have consistently analyzed the situation and derived measures early on," the CEO states. At the same time, the company wanted to continue adhering to the sustainability goals set. Goals such as significant reduction in energy consumption remained important, as Renkhoff-Mücke explains: "Energy scarcity, decreasing availability of resources, and climate change do not take market developments into account. When we committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals or the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement, it was clear to us that we wanted to show real and lasting commitment, not just make lip service." The confirmation of this commitment is reflected in the official recognition by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which the company recently received.

Well positioned for the future despite the crisis

Looking ahead to 2025, the entrepreneur expresses skepticism. She does not expect an economic turnaround in 2025. Rather, the year will be even more challenging than the previous one, with improvement expected at the earliest in 2026. But this forecast is not new, says the Warema CEO. "We already anticipated these developments in 2024 and prepared ourselves consistently. That's why we are still well positioned and will continue to stand by our customers and partners as a reliable support in the future. Meanwhile, we are working intensively on our alignment to enable positive business development despite the diverse challenges.”
