KNX sun shading automation from a single source Coordinated Warema components for consistent planning, simple commissioning and secure operation
These days, sun shading automation with KNX has to fulfil various requirements: excellent planning security, functional depth, IT security and reliable operations across a building’s entire life cycle. To make this happen, Warema offers a completely coordinated KNX portfolio – from actuators to sensor systems, through to supporting apps. All components are functionally aligned and systematically designed to meet sun shading requirements. This enables transparent planning and smooth implementation of individual automation projects.
Weather station: a core building block for efficient control mode
The Warema KNX components integrate seamlessly into KNX networks and cover all central functions of sun shading automation. The Warema KNX secure Weather station pro is a fundamental part of this, a compact and capable sensor system that can be used in both central and decentralised automation concepts. It records wind speed and direction, outside temperature, radiation, dawn/dusk, rainfall and the position of the sun. This lays the foundation for safe and efficient sun shading automation – both in new buildings and when retrofitting existing KNX installations. The optional Warema Plug-in Protect, which is plugged into the weather station’s sensor interface, protects the on-site bus system against overvoltage.
Sun shading automation integrated directly into actuator
Building on the weather station’s sensor system, Warema KNX secure actuators are the central building block for automating sun shading. They are available for 230 V, SMI and SMI LoVo sun shading drives and, with the KNX Secure Standard, enable encrypted communication in the bus system. Special functions are already integrated directly into the actuators – these include sun position calculation, integrated slat tracking and active support for heating and cooling modes. Different priorities can be specifically configured for control and safety functions, while integrated diagnostic functions simplify commissioning and troubleshooting during operation.
Efficient interaction thanks to consistent system logic
Warema’s coordinated product portfolio optimises the interaction between the weather station and actuators. Standardised KNX data points allow the position of the sun shading product and slats to be mapped in a telegram with the aid of the integrated 3-byte object. This simplifies parameterisation in the KNX project planning software (ETS), saves time during commissioning, reduces the load on the bus system and boosts operational safety.
Efficient installation and support all the way through to commissioning
The KNX components are also designed for efficient installation and commissioning. Decentralised installation with surface-mounted actuators enables short line routing with the potential for savings. Integrated binary inputs allow conventional push buttons, switches or window contacts to be connected directly – analysis takes place directly in the actuator. Warema products are also supported by KNX apps: These have been specially developed for mobile end devices and the ETS software to make KNX actuators more user-friendly and efficient to commission. This allows the KNX system to be configured and checked quickly and makes firmware updates simple. Stefan Stöckl, Product Line Manager Bus Systems at Warema, explains: “With our KNX portfolio, we offer our customers and partners high-performance sun shading automation from a single source. Made in Germany, the KNX components form a consistent overall system and lay the foundations for the safe and flexible implementation of standard functions through to sophisticated automation concepts.”

Warema KNX secure actuators are a key component in the automation of office and single-purpose buildings based on the KNX communication standard.
The Warema KNX components are functionally coordinated and cover all core requirements of KNX sun shading automation – from the sensor system, to actuator engineering, through to commissioning.
The Warema KNX secure flush-mounted actuator enables a sun shading drive to be controlled directly and integrates key automation and safety functions into the device.
The surface-mounted and REG actuators allow sun shading drives to be controlled locally – short line routing simplifies installation and offers potential for savings.
The KNX secure Weather station pro consists of two coordinated components:
The Warema Weather station pro reliably records all relevant weather data.
The KNX secure sensor interface (AP or REG) analyses this data and implements it in automation functions in the KNX bus.
The Warema KNX secure actuators in surface-mounted housing, which can be installed locally, enable a flexible system structure and support both new build projects and the retrofitting of existing KNX installations.
The Warema KNX actuator app provides support during commissioning and service – from configuration, to checks, through to firmware updates.
The weather station and actuators can be connected efficiently via standardised KNX data points – the integrated 3-byte object reduces the effort required for parameterisation and boosts the operational safety of the KNX system.
Depending on requirements, the Warema Plug-in Protect can be used to protect the KNX system from overvoltage damage caused by lightning strikes.
