Located in the restored “New Water Tower” in the Oranjepark, Restaurant De Baron offers a very special gastronomic experience, both inside and out. Since Ton Vergunst took over in 2024, the restaurant’s interior has been extensively modernised. He also wanted to bring a new design concept to the restaurant’s outdoor area, which is particularly popular. This concept was centred around a high-quality, elegant solution to protect guests from UV radiation, summer heat and rain on its oval terrace, which spans around 165 square metres.

Big Ben Freestyle customised parasols

A standard solution wouldn’t work with the terrace’s unusual shape. After extensive online research and detailed advice from specialised retailer Jumboparasols, Vergunst opted for Caravita sun shading and weather protection. Six Big Ben Freestyle large parasols were made to measure – a solution that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Four of the parasols (asymmetric with sides up to 6.55 metres in length) were tailored to the sides of the terrace, while two more parasols (with sides 5.28 metres in length) cover the centre, optimising shading for the entire oval space.

“The terrace’s oval shape did require complex planning, but by working closely with the experts at Caravita, we were able to tailor the sun shading to suit the space,” explains Justin Nijenhuis, co-owner of Jumboparasols. With frames in a grey/beige tone and acrylic fabric in a striking chestnut red, the Big Ben Freestyle parasols blend in perfectly with the outdoor area while adding a purposeful touch to its design.

Great wind stability and extras for comfort

With large mast poles and hubs made from high-quality aluminium, the large parasols have great wind stability. The handy telescopic system allows them to be closed simply and safely over tables and terrace furniture. The parasols are also fitted with radiant heaters and LED lights, including dimmers. Even in the evening, guests can enjoy pleasant temperatures and cosy lighting. The experts at Jumboparasols also installed special gutters between the individual parasols to ensure that rainwater drains away.

Careful planning, inspired installation

By planning the project in detail and working closely with Caravita and Ton Vergunst, Jumboparasols ensured that installation and set-up went without a hitch. Justin Nijenhuis explains: “We installed the anchor plates a week after the order was placed, and Caravita had the customised parasols ready in just three weeks. So despite the short time frame, we were able to complete the project before the Easter weekend, ready for the outdoor season.” Ton Vergunst is extremely satisfied with his new shading system: “The terrace is central to our restaurant concept. With these parasols, we now have a solution that not only provides optimal protection, but also fits in perfectly with our venue’s special ambience – both during the day and in the evening.”
