Just two years after it was introduced in the USA, the Matter connection standard is gathering pace. The technology will reduce fragmentation between different providers in the smart home sector and ensure that the devices in a network can exchange data quickly, securely and reliably. As a specialist for smart sun shading products, in 2025 Warema will introduce three flush-mounted actuators under the Xeenos product name. These will allow external venetian blinds, roller shutters, awnings and light to be controlled via Matter.

Demand for Matter is growing, a fact confirmed by Stefan Ruf, Radio Systems Product Line Manager at Warema in Marktheidenfeld: “At the moment, more and more products are being introduced that communicate via this new standard.” Warema has a clear message for the sun shading industry: Matter is here to stay, particularly thanks to companies such as Apple, Google and Samsung, which are integrating the new standard into their smartphones.

Matter is an all-in-one solution for all devices and trades that offers hassle-free connectivity between products from the leading smart home providers. A certified standard ensures that commissioning is simple and quick. With this new development, users will always be one step ahead, as the innovative Matter technology will continue to evolve and adapt to the requirements of the market.

It’s no accident that this standard is being supported by global players. Matter offers a whole host of functions tailored to the smart home sector – and thus to the sun shading industry too – that can benefit end users. These are based on the Thread radio system, which is used by Matter and offers various advantages over conventional Wi-Fi connections:

  • Thread consumes little energy.
This is extremely important for battery-operated devices. Batteries last much longer with Thread than with power-guzzling Wi-Fi. Users save money while contributing to the environment.
  • Thread moves fast.
Data is exchanged quickly between end devices. This is particularly important for smart home products, which often have to communicate with one another in real time. The minimal delay in the radio system ensures that operations aren’t disrupted.
  • Thread is stable.
Another crucial advantage of Thread is its mesh network. In contrast to Wi-Fi, which often relies on a central router, with Thread every integrated device supplied with power acts as a node. The range and stability of the entire system increases with every sun shading product added. Even in larger buildings, this guarantees a consistent and stable connection without the need for additional repeaters or boosters.
  • Thread is secure.
Various security functions protect against unauthorised access. Each Matter-compliant device must be certified and is provided with a unique 11-digit set-up code during initial installation, usually in the form of a QR code. This code is also used to establish an encrypted connection to the network that is maintained during ongoing communication between the devices.

In summary, the Thread protocol offers an energy-efficient, quick and reliable connection that guarantees excellent range and stability through the mesh network. Users of the new Xeenos products will benefit from improved performance and longer-lasting devices.

On the safe side with Warema

Warema is a member of the CSA (Connectivity Standards Alliance) and is at the forefront of the development of this technology. In 2025, it will introduce three flush-mounted actuators that will allow even smarter control of external venetian blinds, roller shutters, awnings and light via Matter. To ensure the technology works in their homes, users currently still require a smart home central control unit – such as the Apple HomePod, Samsung SmartThings Hub, Amazon Echo or Google Nest Hub – which acts as the Matter controller.

For the specialised retailers through whom Warema markets its sun shading products, Matter is a huge step in the right direction. “Long discussions with end customers and poring over data sheets are a thing of the past”, says Stefan Ruf. “If an awning is compatible with the Matter standard and the customer has Matter at home, then it will work.” Warema will support specialised retailers as they introduce Matter products. “We want retailers to feel safe with us, no matter how quickly the standard is established. With our help, our partners can be certain that they won’t miss out on this development in the market.” If certain areas are not covered by Matter, Warema aims to support its retailers with additional functions.

Stefan Ruf believes that the new connection standard will become established. “In three to four years, all we’ll have to do is check whether a product is compatible with Matter”, he predicts. “At that point, nobody will be concerned with the technology behind it.”

The new Matter connection standard works on the Thread radio system, which will make all integrated sun shading products more stable.

In 2025, WAREMA will introduce three flush-mounted actuators under the Xeenos product name that will allow sun shading products and light to be controlled via Matter.

Depending on the time of day, position of the sun and weather conditions, the Matter connection standard optimises the feeling of well-being inside the home.

The Thread protocol ensures an energy-efficient, fast connection with excellent range and stability. An integrated weather station offers additional protection against storm damage.

Users of the new Xeenos products will benefit from improved performance and longer-lasting sun shading systems.
