“Exactly what we need” Terrace covering for the Kaiser Konstantin brewery
The terrace of the Kaiser Konstantin brewery in Cologne’s Deutz district offers a breathtaking view of the old town, cathedral and Rhine. Whether it’s sunny, windy or raining, guests can enjoy a freshly drawn glass of Kölsch beer alongside traditional German and Mediterranean cuisine – and it’s all thanks to Warema’s Perea P70 terrace covering.
Located at Kennedy-Ufer 1, the brewery has a simple, modern interior and an outdoor area that provides a spectacular view of the Cologne skyline. Effective sun shading on the terrace is essential to ensure the comfort of its guests. Its previous solution was of limited use due to its exposed location and susceptibility to the wind. This had a negative effect on revenue and only covered a small section of the terrace.
For all these reasons, the brewery opted for the Perea P70 pergola awning from Warema. This is made up of two individual units, each five metres wide and four metres deep. The 40-square-metre area can accommodate around 30 people. “Pergola awnings are particularly stable because of their poles”, says Rolf Bergmann of Markisen Bergmann GmbH in Cologne. “The electric Perea P70 stands out due to its back-pull principle with toothed belts. This keeps the fabric taut at all times and ensures it remains stable even in winds of up to wind force 7”. Travelling reinforcement profiles also tighten the fabric for controlled rainwater drainage. The front transverse frames are designed to act as fully integrated drainage gutters and divert the water to the outer poles, where the water is directed down to the ground.
Rolf Bergmann and his son Raoul planned the terrace covering and assembled it together with their team. It proved a little tricky to attach the poles to the concrete borders of the flowerbeds by the terrace. Bergmann discussed this with Warema, and its technicians produced special elements that will keep the poles secure in the long term.
Outdoor hospitality, even in changeable conditions
Thanks to the weatherproof awning fabric, guests can now sit outside even in changeable weather. This allows the brewery both to increase the number of guests it can accommodate and to respond more flexibly to customer requests. The Perea P70 is fitted with Soltis W96, a high-performance, waterproof sun shading fabric. What makes this rainproof textile so remarkable is that despite being highly waterproof, it lets through lots of light to create a wonderful ambience with plenty of natural light. Even in intense sunshine, the fabric helps to maintain a pleasant temperature on the terrace, blocking out up to 97 percent of UV rays. When partially opened, the fabric has a visually pleasing folding technique. When retracted completely, the fabric is reliably protected from the weather.
If required, vertical awnings with easyZIP guidance on the front of the structure can protect against low-lying sun, rain and wind. The translucent awning screen fabric is extremely wind-stable and allows guests to look out across the Rhine to the districts on the opposite shore. The consistent design of all components emphasises the awning’s high quality and reflects the brewery’s upscale gastronomic offerings.
Fulfilling customer wishes with atmospheric and flexible controls
In the evening, as the lights of the old town and bridges are reflected on the water, the Rhine takes on a very special charm. Dimmable LED strips attached to the awning’s travelling transverse frames create a wonderful ambience on the terrace. These lights can be easily controlled via radio using the WMS plus handheld transmitter. This can be used not only to adjust the lighting, but also to extend and retract the individual awnings.
The Kaiser Konstantin team are particularly grateful for the increase in flexibility and their new-found ability to plan for larger events. Even on hot days, the terrace is a pleasant place to sit and binding reservations can be taken when the weather is unsettled. The strong winds on the banks of the Rhine are no problem for the new structure.
Being able to use the terrace almost all year round is having a tangible effect on the brewery’s revenue and boosting its occupancy rate. The consensus at this popular Cologne hangout is that “this is exactly what we need”.
